becos' i love you.

this was done for my cousin's wedding
a last page of a slide show during the dinner.
i like the title "becos i love you."
cos u can run away from any tricky situation
from your loved ones with this line.
"why did you forget my bdae?"
-becos i love you.
"why did you buy me tt ugly action figure as a gift?"
-becos i love you.
"why did you eat my cat?"
becos i love you.
i miss the times when i got tt line as a sms.

hmmm an early valentine's gift to everyone cos
i'm always not in time for the festivities.
life is full of love.
pins can draw lovey dovey cute stuff too other than the
usual warriors and samurais.
inspired by mitsuru adachi of "touch"

warrior in the rain.

repaint repain

a repaint of my first post on blogger.
this was the first sketch i've done
and now i've decided to do a repaint!
experimented with colors and texture
cos i've never really done something with a green tone before.

i miss you

i figured that the loneliest guy
in the world would be an astronaut.
he has just visited planet "paddle-pop"
thus the color of his astronaut costume...
besides it looks almost like a slightly more cheerful
prison outfit u noe, black and white stripes...
like he's imprisoned in space.

here's the sketch by the way that started it all.

dedicated to all the people we miss...

pins vs pink

urmmm hi, this is not really a tutorial but
jus a sharing of ideas and techniques.

first of i start with a sketch.

then i throw in a simple bkgrd color and start to "painting with photoshopping."
the sketch is on a separate bkgrd with multiply as the setting.
i've never used pink in my work before so i've decided to give it a try...

now i paint over the layer of the sketch to cover up my messy lines haha
i've been told by many great artists to keep my lines clean
but to their dismay and horror i jus find it difficult to do so.
i like tidiness but when it comes to drawing i'm very messy...
i mus change...

i told myself ... "hey the john abruzzi hair has got to go..."
so goodbye long hair to mr pink warrior guy bye bye and hair no more...
the power of photoshopping.
now i need to enhance the bkgrd with a tint of blue.

almost there but mr itchy fingers pins have decided to add some little highlights
and lines to define the outline??? urmmm a small difference but hope you can see
hehe...

and it's almost done and i've decided to stop because the more
i stare at it the more mistakes i see...
so good bye for now or i'll never stop painting this dude...
work can never be finished...

need to go home and watch prison break!!!
wait... it's monday!!!
'DOH!

Predator

recently i dunno what came to me
i jus felt like drawing predator but...
with a twist. i had this idea of how the predator space ship
would travel to japan kill a few clans of samurai fellas.
they picked 1 of the best and decides to train him
to become 1 of em before he commits suicide as his whole clan has died.
the jappo samurai best of the best sword of honour dude
learns all the technology and hunting skills of the predator and probably wipes out
the whole spaceship of predators later...
i dunno jus a idea cos i think the predator and samurai share some
similar warrior code...hmmm....

so grab your average predator gear and put on samurai
who loses his top knot but still maintains the
i cut of half of my scalp's hair but leaves the back real long dude.

here's the 3rd sketch
this time in full gear with helmet and all.
did this on the train and finished it while waiting for friends
at olio dome. coincidentally when i was doing this piece
on the night itself they showed predator 2 on TV!!!

and now for the final sketch i did on the train
on my way to visit my grandad in hospital.
this one shows more of his samurai heritage haircut...

a scam i did for a photoshoot that is to be
made into a standee, for a local church body.
girl on the left is supposed to be eunice olsen.
have decided to spend more effort on this one
cos lately i want my scams to be more polished
and look more presentable for the client.

can design really touch your heart?

this was one of the projects that i was tasked to do.
brief was simple to promote four films
"murderball", "the beat that my heart skipped", "snowcake"
and "don't come knocking". had to do all these
within the space of the cathay gallery.

i wanted to do something different and inspiring at the same time.
the challenge for me was to think of a common theme
amongst these 4 films.they are individual with diffn storytelling
of course but i wanted to find something common amongst them
so that the gallery did not look too busy or haphazard.
promoting 4 very interesting and inspiring films
but having something to bind them together.

let's get working.

this was ground zero.

next had to plonk in some corporate text
to tell people what this is about.

insert film stills of the 4 respective movies as the background.

this is the middle section. i know it doesnt make sense now
but jus bear in mind that this is the middle part inside the gallery.

now this is the glass panel on the surface itself.

by itself it reads

"stand up", "follow your passion",
"Be free" and "do something unselfish".

but if you see it collectively from the middle ground, it reads like this.

"can you STAND UP even after
your spirit and your spine has been crushed?"
for murderball this was from the movie website
which i did some research on.
i felt that this line was exceptionally touching and inspiring.

for beat that my heart skipped.

it read "if you had a chance
to FOLLOW YOUR PASSION, would you take it?"
this line was from the movie trailer itself.

for snow cake it was

"would you like to BE FREE?
set free from all your demons?"
this was probably inspired by what sigourney weaver said in the movie.

for dont come knocking it was
"have you ever wanted to DO SOMETHING UNSELFISH
for the first time in your life?"

and lastly when you combine everything
hopefully it would look like this.

i wanted to do the gallery pretty simple
and clean cut with emphasise on the text and message.
the traffic around that area is pretty busy and i hope something
simple and neat would capture people's attention.
we are constantly bombarded by visuals and text in this busy world.
it's a real challenge to show that "less is more."
sometimes i wonder why is it so hard for me to make things simple.

although this idea was not chosen and we'll never see this in reality
but i was glad i did it and put my heart and soul to it.
there are many factors i feel to make this work
which is often not within the designer's control and that is
time and budget and what the client really wants.
even though if it's really inspiring or cool
it might not serve the client's purpose or corporate need.
they might like it but sometimes there might not be
enough budget or it's simply not what they hope to achieve.
the idea might not sell.

"the one who pays the piper, is the one who sets the tune."
a quote i learnt recently.

sagmeister said that he hopes he can touch
people's hearts with graphic design.
i hope one day i too can touch
people's heart with graphic design.
it might not be easy, it might not sell
but we should never stop pushing ourselves.
i hope i never give up on this thought.
reality bites you in the arse.
your rent is due and you've got laundry to do.

can design really touch your heart?

these four films are really great. i hope i can get tickets for all of them! YAY!!!
if not i better design something that sells and have money to pay for em! YAY!!!

"sorry, kid. but the good guy
can't always save the world.
sometimes he just does what he can...
eats his broccoli..
and hope everything works out."

from "spider-man ray of light" by kaare andrews.
