Final Project at LAS

my final project at LAS was to model and texture a truck
with given references, within a span of 2 weeks.
(about 9 days as friday noon was the deadline.)
spent about a week and a half on modelling and UV.
i think i took only 1 and a half days to paint and weather the truck textures..
(wished i had more time : )
i chose the truck that i liked most amongst the many 1930s truck we had.
i was the only jumpster to choose this truck
so wasn't too stressed up by what the other guys were doing.
however this was one hell of a big truck with lots of details to it.
i think it was the colors that drew my attention to this truck.

anyway i decided to texture this truck as a homage
to one of my favourite artists
ashley wood based on his popbot designs.
alot of the textures were also based on the designs of tom muller
another one of my favourite graphic designer.

some close ups

texture maps.

2)

so i didn't land the gig at LAS after 6 months of intensive training.
but i would like to thank LAS and EDB for making all this happen.
i had no prior 3D modelling experience but only passion and hunger
and now i can say that i know maya.
(which i thought was the name of some
hot european supermodel, 6 months ago : )

thanks to the following...
xavier,tad,aamir,nurul,reuben,gulaya,bertrand,justin,james,linda,amy
the trainers: marc and punn from LA.
the instructors: calvin, wayne, james mahoney and esther.
and everyone else whom i met at LAS.
you guys are all stars!
to the 6 that made it. it was a pleasure knowing you guys!
i had fun and was honoured to be in your presence.
sorry about my cold jokes.
to the 6 that didn't, myself included.
well sometimes sith happens.

gonna miss the thursday breakfasts, free movies,
beers after monthlies and life drawing classes!

keep trucking yo!

starbucks' here i come!

water

had the great chance to meet john mahoney
and esther shin from Cal Arts during my stay in LAS.
i felt that it was very good working culture
for the company to organise such enrichment events.
and i signed up for 2. life drawing and drawing from film.

here are some of the painings i did.

life male model infused with reference from justin sweet

this is my first painting with water color. life male model

paintings done after work.
stared at greyscale maya model for too long.
needed to see some colors.
no reference.(tts y look a bit funky.)
random samurai fella and gas mask dude.

centaur fella (no reference.)
the tarzan dude had a male model reference.
his last pose for the day i remember.

life drawing of female model with reference
mecha elements by kow yokoyama infused to it.
1st 2 was more of a life drawing study.
the third was the mecha infused figure.

male figure drawing nude
but with visuals projected on his body via overhead projector.

water color is a very interesting media for me tho it's my first attempt at it.
should have done so a long time ago.
it's unpredictable and hard to control
(just like your wife/girlfriend/husband/boyfriend : )
but it never ceases to surprise you with their beauty and spontaneity.
(which is why you love em' in the 1st place ; )
still have lots to learn about this media so will practice and experiment more.

"why so serious..."

water color experiment.
done before watching the Dark Knight.

Archer

a quick digital sketch done after work.
took about 3 - 4 hours roughly.
quick color variations.

greet death III

so here's the final image.

it all started from a sketch on the train.
(sketching on the train in singapore is much easier than on the bus.)

some WIP shots...trying to use brown as the underlay for the painting.
not sure if it works well.

and here we go.
okie will stop doing all these fanart for now.
but i think i like this character way too much.
going back to modelling and UVs.
wish me luck!

Twilight chases the sun

havent been posting much or painting for tt matter.
anyway, i whipped out one of my first paintings
i did on photoshop with my dear dear tablet...
i have no idea how bad the original one was.
well it's featured right here actually.

here's the work in progress...
you could see all the reference i picked up when
i was painting initially.
after i got a rough idea of what i wanted
i just let things flow on it's own...
even wanted to put some angkor wat photo n paint over it or something...
decided to put a buddy fella next to him and realise
it wld just complicate things...
oh well...keep things simple.

Twilight chases the sun is a fantastic album by a band called Furniture.
good luck finding it.

greet death II

had to do a variant version.
it was so fun playing with the hues.
and was playing with the backgrounds.
corals maybe?
which one do you prefer?

started from a sketch on the train as usual

some work in progress
i start by painting in grayscale first.

looking at the 2 variants trying to compare which i liked more...

decided to whip out an old sketch
and started painting.
rather happy with the process.
it was fun.
had some time anyways.

greet death

started from a sketch on the train

process

have always been intrigued by george lucas' phantom menace.
designed by ian maccaig and further pushed forward by a.m.bride's version
in visionaries... a bit of my own rendition.
hope it didn't look too bad.
started from a doodle on the train.
greet death is a song by explosions in the sky.
: )

vega collab

still freelancing like a vagabond.
but one of the benefits is to meet different people,
different very talented artists like ken, bruce and keehong.
all from one of the greatest art schools across the causeway
one academy. not that this is some entry to advertise how good they are,
i'm very honoured to have come across them and meet them face to face,
exchange ideas, dreams and criticisms.
in fact my first art director i worked with, sok kuan was also from one academy.
: )
here is a humble paint_over and collaboration work
with one of the very talented artist i work with at an ad agency.
he's no other than keehong.
sorry if i made your art work look bad bro!
here's porcupine boy like wat muki calls it....

we only come out at night

a random character.
some zombie hunter
which somehow happens to look a lil like riddick.
started doodling and then just couldnt stop and had to
finish it if not it wld be left dangling in my folder
haunting me forever.
oh well. headin back to practice my anatomy.
no more random stuff like these.
: )
work in progress here.

working from black n white to color to get the values.
but the anatomy looks fucked so back to basics for me.

大魔王与悟饭

a big fan of dragonball z so here's a fan art.
i remember as a kid i would anticipate
with excitement every issue of the comic especially
when the z warriors were fighting cell and when magin bu
first came out we had such a good laugh
only to realise how powerful tt lard bucket was.

hope you know who the bird symbolise.
this image was inspired by
1 of the paintings of the great jeff jones.

experimenting with colors.
for piccolo the highlights i used orange and the shadows blue.
as we all know piccolo is green.
hope i didn't fucked up this piece tho.
C.C welcome as usual.

final repaint

halfway there...

the initial sketch ...like about a year ago.

"there is still good in him..."
1 of those nights when you just can't get to sleep.
you salvage a sketch from your dumps.
